Officer Vanessa Shelly is a police officer and the daughter of William Afton. Tasked to monitor Mike Schmidt under her father’s orders but instead befriended Schmidt and his sister Abby Schmidt. When Shelly defied her father, Afton attacked her, leaving her unconscious. After Afton was stopped, the Schmidts rescued Shelly and took her to the hospital, where she began a slow recovery from her coma.

Vanessa Shelly was the daughter of William Afton, the creator of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Place. Growing up, she would become a massive fan of the pizzeria and its animatronics. Her father would also give her an orange toy airplane, unaware that it was a trophy from a kidnapping that he committed. In the 1980s, five children would mysteriously disappear at the restaurant and would come to learn that her father was responsible for the incident. Shelly became wary of her father but was emotionally manipulated into following him. As an adult, she became a police officer.

Vanessa Shelly is a confident police officer who knows perhaps a little more than she lets on. Despite her abundant confidence, deep down Shelly harbors a lot of fear and resentment for her father, William Afton. She can come across as bold, snarky, and even arrogant around others. When in her father's presence however, Shelly grows very quiet, somewhat emotional, and timid.

- In the video game series, Vanessa A. is a night guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex who was infected by a computer virus replicating William Afton and developed an alternate personality named Vanny.
- The gun that Shelly used to shoot Afton is a Beretta 92 FS, the same gun that Stu Macher, portrayed by Matthew Lillard, used to hold Sidney Prescott hostage in Scream.
