Schmidt attempts to save Garrett Schmidt

"You know we used to have a brother, right? Garrett. I don’t… I don’t really talk about him very much.
Neither did Mom or Dad.
Yeah, it was hard for them. It’s hard for me, too."
―Mike Schmidt and Abby Schmidt[src]

During a trip to Covered Pines Campground, Schmidt was put in charge of watching Garrett Schmidt but was horrified to see him taken away in a car. He chased after it but couldn’t keep up, and despite a search, no evidence was found. The loss shattered his family—his mother, desperate for another son, gave birth to Abby Schmidt instead, which drove her further into madness. After Schmidt turned eighteen, his father left, with his mother soon passing away, leaving him as Abby’s sole guardian. Struggling to support her, he worked briefly at Tire Zone before being fired for insubordination, then as custodial staff at Media World until it shut down. Eventually, he found stability as a security guard at the local mall.

"You beat up a man in broad daylight. In front of his child."
Steve Raglan to Mike Schmidt[src]

During his shift, Schmidt shared his book, Dream Theory, with his coworker Jeremiah. After reading a portion, Jeremiah asked if Schmidt believed in its contents, to which Schmidt replied that belief was personal. Jeremiah then reminisced about trading a Cal Ripken Jr. rookie card for a used copy of Missile Command and wishing he could undo it. When he asked to borrow the book, Schmidt declined.

Mike in line

Schmidt sees a boy being taken

While waiting in line for ice cream, Schmidt noticed a young boy standing alone. As he went to order, he saw a man leading the child away, triggering memories of his brother’s abduction. Acting on impulse, Schmidt rushed forward, tackling the man into a fountain and attacking him in a blind rage—until the boy cried out to his dad. Realizing his mistake, Schmidt was stopped by Jeremiah and was fired for his outburst.

A New Job Offering[]

Schmidt gets Abby Schmidt’s attention

"You’re being a jerk.
You know I have somewhere I have to be. Come on, let’s go. Five minutes. I need you dressed."
―Mike Schmidt to Abby Schmidt

The next day, unemployed again, Schmidt decided to see a career counselor. While getting dressed, he found Abby hiding in a fort she had built. Calling for her and shaking the fort to get her attention, he reminded her they were leaving soon. As he left, Abby threw a stuffed animal at him in protest.

After dropping Abby at school, Schmidt went to the career counselor’s office, waiting to be called into Steve Raglan’s office. Raglan reviewed his file, questioning him about the mall incident, which Schmidt defended as an accident. When Raglan read Schmidt’s full name, he froze, then oddly offered coffee, confusing Mike. After pouring himself a cup, Raglan explained Mike’s limited job options. As Mike prepared to leave in despair, Raglan mentioned a security job, prompting him to sit back down. Upon hearing about the low pay, Mike tried to leave, but Raglan handed him a business card before he exited.

Delinquency notice

Schmidt finds a delinquency notice

Schmidt drove home, found a delinquency notice on the door, and thanked Abby’s babysitter, Max. He checked on Abby, who was drawing in her room, but she refused to eat, frustrating him. When Abby said he was sitting on her friend, Mike responded indifferently. After Schmidt mentioned that not eating wouldn’t help her grow, Abby’s friend called him an idiot, leading Schmidt to assert his reality over the imaginary friend. That night, Schmidt had a dream about Garrett Schmidt’s kidnapping and struggled to identify who took his brother.

"But what if it’s not up to me? My aunt, she’s an idiot, but she’s right. No judge in their right mind is ever gonna side with me."
―Mike Schmidt to Doctor Lillian

The next morning, Schmidt took Abby to school but was called into a meeting with their aunt Jane Schmidt, her lawyer Doug, and Abby’s teacher, Doctor Lillian. Jane accused Schmidt of being unfit to care for a “mentally ill” child like Abby, calling him a degenerate. As tensions rose between Lillian and Jane, Jane ordered Doug to hand Schmidt court papers, warning him to sign them or risk losing custody of Abby forever.

After the meeting, Schmidt spoke with Lillian, expressing his belief that his sister didn’t care for him and that Jane might be right. Lillian reassured him, saying that he meant the world to Abby. She also advised Mike to find another job to strengthen his case for keeping custody of his sister.

Upon arriving at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Place, he surveyed the area and entered the office, where he found a VHS tape labeled with his name. Personality[]

"There are ghost children possessing giant robots? Thanks for the heads up."
―Mike Schmidt to Vanessa Shelly[src]

Mike Schmidt is a deeply troubled yet inherently protective individual, shaped by the trauma of his past. His defining trait is his unwavering guilt over the kidnapping of his younger brother, Garrett Schmidt, an event that has haunted him since childhood. This guilt manifests in recurring dreams where he obsessively tries to recall the face of the abductor, clinging to the hope that he can somehow change the past. His inability to move on isolates him, leaving him emotionally closed off and struggling to maintain stability in his life. Despite his best efforts, he finds himself jobless and on the verge of losing custody of his younger sister, Abby, further reinforcing his belief that he is a failure.

His guilt also impacts his relationship with the people he’s previously worked with. While he was capable of forming friendships, such as with his coworker Jeremiah, he remained distant and unwilling to open up. His quick temper and emotional instability ultimately led to his firing, as his unresolved trauma caused him to lash out violently when he thought he was witnessing another child abduction. His inability to separate the past from the present cost him his job and further reinforced his belief that he was incapable of doing anything right.

The one person that represents Schmidt’s fear is William Afton, a man who takes children away from their families and leaves them with no closure. Their dynamic is one of manipulation and power; Afton, disguised as Steve Raglan, preys on Schmidt’s desperation by offering him a job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place. Schmidt, unaware of Afton’s true nature, sees him only as an unnervingly persistent career counselor, but as the truth unfolds, his hatred for Afton grows. When he is confronted by Afton, he is forced to confront him directly, shifting from a passive victim of circumstance to someone willing to fight back.

Vanessa Shelly is one of the few people who shows Schmidt genuine kindness, though their relationship is complicated. At first, she seems like an ally, offering guidance and knowledge about the pizzeria. However, her cryptic behavior and reluctance to share the full truth put a strain on their dynamic. While she does care for Schmidt and Abby, her loyalty to her father prevents her from taking decisive action against Afton until it’s nearly too late. Despite this, Schmidt ultimately sees her as someone who, like him, is trapped by the past, and their shared trauma allows them to understand each other in ways no one else can.

Above all, Schmidt is a man defined by his struggles, his guilt, failures, and unwillingness to move on. He is neither a traditional hero nor an outright victim; instead, he is someone caught in between, desperately trying to make things right but constantly falling short. However, his greatest strength lies in his resilience. Even when he is at his lowest, he continues to fight, whether it’s for his sister, helping those in need, or for some semblance of redemption. His journey is not about erasing the past but learning to live with it, and in the end, he proves that while he may never fully heal, he can still protect those he loves.
